Outline:
In this workshop of the DATAMIG COST Action Working Group 3, Laboratory, we begin to engage with the theme of possible futures of resistance to datafied migration and border control regimes. The two-day workshop will embrace various topics related to contesting datafied migration and border control regimes, bringing together contributions of academics, activists, and journalists. Working sessions are dedicated to explore common themes, methodologies and initiatives of knowledge transfer and possible future collaborations across journalistic and academic research.
The workshop includes two sessions led by PorCausa:
– 1) Session on “New Narratives on Migration: case studies and hands-on practical work to reach broader audiences when talking / informing about migrations” and
– 2) Session on “Migration Control Industry: porCausa’s own methodology combining investigative journalism, data journalism, and academic/traditional research; includes case studies and practical exercises (border externalization and so on). The methodology will be transferable and applicable in any EU country.
Additionally, we will have two sessions led by DATAMIG’s laboratory:
1) Experimental session in small groups on different methodologies (such as “Follow the Money”, “Freedom of Information”, Open Source Data)
– 2) Session on “Future Collaborations” with brief inputs of exemplary collaborations across academia and journalism addressing the datafied migration and border control regime, and discussing synergies, challenges, and possible avenues of future collaborations.
We invite you to share expressions of interest for your participation by answering briefly to the following 3 questions (keep in mind that your responses will be made available to other participants before the workshop):
1. Can you briefly share at least one example of your own work or an example you are interested in which you would like to share during the workshop around resistance (methodologies, approaches, and collaborations relevant for academia and journalism) to datafied migration and border control regime? If possible, please provide references, links)
2. What are the developments, themes and sites related to expected trends of datafied migration and border control you would want to prioritize and you would want to engage with regarding the future of resistance and possible collaborations across journalism and academia?
3. What can the future of collaboration across journalism and academia look like? What are approaches, methodologies and resources that can create synergies? What are the challenges? Before the workshop we will share some further resources with you that we like you to engage with.
